Linux Experience
Sometime in the 1998-1999 timeframe, I upgraded to a broadband Internet connection with a cablemodem. Wanting to connect both my computer and my wife's computer at the same time, and having no support from the ISP for such activity, and no affortable routers of the day, I built my first Linux box from an old Pentium 100. Upon installation, the myriad of possibilities were opened up to me, and the system became a webserver, mailserver (with webmail), caching DNS server, chatserver, Samba fileserver, and C/C /Java development box (command line), on top of it's primary purposes of DHCP server and NAT router. My best uptime with it was nearing 400 days before I took it down to give it a memory and harddrive upgrade.
It was a Red Hat 6x system. I have also built several other Linux boxes, including Mandrake (before the name change to Mandriva), SuSE (7.2, 8x, and 9, before it's purchase), I've used Knoppix as a system tool and test suite, and dabbled with building my own custom flavor starting with CoreDistro (defunct, and last I checked the community was divided on how or where to move on to. Core2 and Eidix are two names I recall).
Where He Works
I recently got a "real job" with a customer service callcenter. I'll soon be bored out of my mind at work, because we can't have pens, paper, books, or Internet browsing... basically they are paranoid about people stealing the customer information, which I understand, but with no outlet for the flow of ideas I always have, I'll be needing a new position fairly soon. I have the "graveyard" shift, 10pm to 7am, and I'll be working every other weekend. Hopefully I'll be able to make LUG meetings.
I still have my work from home jobs, telecommuting to Ottawa Canada for development and simply working from home on my pet hosting company, but neither is helping with bills yet, so I've got the "real job".
Other
I moved to Jacksonville in June of 2006, so I barely know anyone but the people who I brought with me. I was going to move to Ottawa for my development job, but immigration turned out to be quite a pain, and next to impossible. That led us to do some searching both within and without, came across a website Find My Spot which gave us each a big list of places that we would 'fit in' to, and Jacksonville was the one we all had in common. Fun site, but don't search for it. lol
